Some is better than none
I'm not sure how we got here, but March is nearly over, spring is upon us, and we're about to start Q2. My first three months were, well, crazy? I'm not sure what adjective to insert here. Stressful, exciting, busy, frustrating, liberating all work! And I can't help but reflect on my word of the year, harmony.
Harmony is, by definition, "a consistent, orderly, or pleasing arrangement of parts; congruity." (Thanks, Dictionary.com.) As I kept harmony top of mind this year, I was reminded of two adages that are opposite sides of the same coin:
Good is not the enemy of perfect.
Some is better than none.
What do I mean? Well, it's the little things that make a big difference when you add them up. Previously, if I didn't have time to walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes, I'd skip it entirely. Not going to be perfect? Not worth my time. Now with harmony as a priority, I jump on for even 5-7 minutes to get my body moving. And like interest, imagine how that compounds over time! Some is better than none! Another example? Instead of telling myself, "Just another 15 minutes!" before shutting down my laptop late at night, I log off. Working late means skipping my reading time before bed, and well, that's not very harmonious, is it?!
Harmony has reminded me of these lessons and really taken my perfectionism is task. "Congruity" does not require perfection. In fact, it demands messiness in order to be "pleasing." To achieve that delightful arrangement of mind, body, and spirit, perfectionism takes a back seat. Good is better than perfect!
So far, harmony is my favorite word of the year ever, so I can't wait to see how it serves me in Q2. Do you have a word of the year? If so, did it work for you? Will you change it? Drop me a line and let me know!
